Carbon neutral diamonds from Diamond Foundry on marble.

We are SO excited to announce that Ethica Diamonds are now offering you the choice of having Carbon Neutral Diamonds in your jewellery.

Up until now, Ethica Diamonds have specialised in diamond alternative gemstones. As a company, our focus is on sustainability and minimising our impact on this earth. We believe you can achieve the same beautiful diamond look, but without the human and environmental toll that comes from mining diamonds.

Lab-grown diamonds aren’t a new phenomenon, in fact, they have been around since the 1940s, although it was during the 1970s that diamond labs became interested in producing stones that looked more like the natural ones. So why are we only now introducing Carbon Neutral Diamonds into our offering?

Since we began, 10 years ago, there have been many technological advances with lab-grown diamonds. It’s only in the past few years that lab-grown diamonds have been available truly clear or as “white diamonds”. Before that, they were more of a brown/yellow colour.

Before we go any further, carbon-neutral diamonds are not fake. They have the same physical, atomic and elemental properties as mined diamonds and even possess some of nature’s own fingerprints, just without the environmental impact. It’s like getting ice from your freezer versus getting it from a glacier as they are still chemically, physically and optically identical. Also as the origin is clean compared with a mined diamond, they are the most ethical choice in diamonds. Only a reputable diamond grading lab with advanced equipment would be able to distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a mined one.

The diamonds grow inside a lab using high-end technology that replicates the natural diamond growing process.

The process starts by cutting a small piece of pre-existing diamonds, a “seed”, which is then placed in a sealed chamber heated up to temperatures as high as the sun’s outer layer; growing the diamond atom by atom until a rough diamond is formed, identical to what comes out from a mine. It takes approximately 6 to 12 weeks to grow a diamond.

We source our carbon-neutral diamonds from San-Francisco based Diamond Foundry. They are the world’s first and only certified carbon neutral diamond producer. Backed by Leonardo Di Caprio, their diamonds have impeccable provenance and no human or environmental toll.

Their advanced technology notably uses less energy than industrial mining requires to extract diamonds from underground. And the energy they use is good energy — renewable hydropower energy. Their diamonds are sustainably grown aboveground in America’s beautiful Pacific West, powered by the Columbia River.
